System 3R vs EROWA ITS: Choosing the Right EDM Tooling Standard

Published: June 2026 · By JIELINK Engineering Team · 6 min read

System 3R and EROWA ITS are the two dominant workholding standards in precision EDM and CNC machining. Both promise repeatable positioning within microns. Both have been in the market for decades. But they are not interchangeable — and choosing one (or mixing both) has long-term implications for your tooling inventory, setup procedures, and cost structure.

When to Choose Each

Choose System 3R if: Your shop already uses 3R tooling and you want backward compatibility. You do a lot of EDM-specific work (3R originated in EDM). Your team is more familiar with the 3R ecosystem.

Choose EROWA ITS if: You want a unified workholding system across EDM, milling, grinding, and CMM. You plan to automate with a robot loader (EROWA's automation ecosystem is more complete). You have a mix of machine brands and need maximum interoperability.

The Aftermarket Advantage

JIELINK produces compatible chucks, holders, pallets, and accessories for both systems at 40–60% of OEM pricing — with same-spec precision and materials. All our tooling is interchangeable with the OEM standards. For shops that want to expand their tooling inventory without the OEM markup, aftermarket compatibility is the practical choice.
